Another Hack by the pickle: Hacking Microsoft Internet Explorer's internal Creator Codes

IE 5 is great, but there are a couple small idiosyncracies. Whenever you save a text file, IE makes it a native IE file, so when you double-click it later, it opens in IE. I like to have my text files open in BBEdit. Similarly, IE doesn't save a creator code for TIFF or AIFF files, so these get generic icons and you can't open them as easily in the Finder. To change the creator codes IE assigns to certain files:

  1. Open a COPY of your Internet Explorer application with your resource editor of choice.
  2. Open up the 'Mos1' resources.
  3. Open the MIME type for which you want to change the default creator code. The first four bytes of the resource are the type code and the second four are the creator code. I've written a ResEdit template for the Mos1 resource type to make editing easier. To use the template, download it, unstuff it, and open it with your resource editor of choice. Copy the 'tmpl' resource out of it and paste it into your resource editor's Preferences file, assigning a Unique ID if necessary.
  4. BBEdit (creator code 'R*ch'), Tex-Edit Plus (TBB6), and SimpleText (ttxt) are popular choices for text. Photoshop (8BIM) and JPEGViewer (JVWR) are good for TIFF files. QuickTime Player (TVOD) is good for almost all kinds of audio and video files.
